surface + orifice 山女畫 (2023) marks the debut exhibition of artist duo xss—Samantha and Sarah—in Singapore, held across two floors of a gallery. This provocative body of 12 works examines the historical conflict between the feminine body and sin, challenging cultural platitudes around moral transgressions imposed on women.
Through a series of lenticular prints, XSS juxtaposes dewy layers of flesh with the weathered textures of mountainscapes, creating a visual dialogue that fades in and out, reflecting the tension between purity and perceived immorality. The mountain, an inert symbol, and the cave, an allegory of introspection, draw on historical fascination from pilgrims and cultural thinkers, reimagined here as a feminist critique.
Each print invites viewers to confront societal judgments, using the body as a site of both reverence and scrutiny. Sarah Lin Fang Yi’s interdisciplinary lens, paired with Samantha’s collaborative vision, transforms the gallery into a space of reflection, where the feminine form is both grounded and transcendent. Surface + Orifice 山女畫 underscores xss's commitment to redefining narratives around women’s bodies through bold, textured artistry, fostering dialogue on identity and morality
surface + orifice 山女畫 is honored to be a part of Singapore International Photography Festival 2024
