Lin’s larger-than-life soft sculpture channels the psychic landscape of anxiety and loneliness that has characterized the pandemic for many, as well as being a nod to the bittersweet comedy, “Lars and The Real Girl” (2007). In the latter, the titular character finds a life partner in a sex doll, a symptom of his inability to make significant social contact with others. His predicament echoes the reigning paradigms of our virus-afflicted age: the fear of being infected through social interaction, and the enforced solitude that it necessitates. Here, the artist has drawn upon her earlier work in graphic illustration, substituting Lars’ doll with a downbeat canine character from an unpublished graphic novel, suggesting the fundamental melancholy of the film whilst pointing up our longing for companionship and company.
